What is Tyre Load Index ?
The Load Index is a number that tells you the maximum weight a tyre can safely carry when properly inflated.
Common Load Index for Commercial Tyres in India:
- Load Index 140 | Max Load per Tyre (kg) 2,500 kg | Best For Light trucks
- Load Index 146 |Max Load per Tyre (kg) 3,000 kg |Best For Standard trucks
- Load Index 148/145 |Max Load per Tyre (kg) 3,150 / 2,900 kg | Best For 10.00-20 Truck Tyres
- Load Index 152 |Max Load per Tyre (kg) 3,550 kg |Best For Heavy-duty
- Load Index 160 |Max Load per Tyre (kg) 4,500 kg Best For High-load trailers
Pro Tip : Always choose a tyre whose Load Index is equal to or higher than what your vehicle requires.
Overloading is one of the biggest reasons for premature tyre failure in India.
What is Tyre Speed Rating ?
The Speed Rating (the letter at the end) indicates the maximum speed the tyre can safely handle for a long time.
Common Speed Ratings:
- K = 110 km/h
- L = 120 km/h
- M= 130 km/h
- N= 140 km/h
For most Indian trucks and buses running on highways, K or L rating is sufficient. Higher ratings are usually more expensive and meant for faster vehicles.
Why This Matters on Indian Roads
- Indian highways + heavy overloading + high temperatures = high stress on tyres.
- A low Load Index tyre on an overloaded truck can burst.
- Using a tyre with very high speed rating (unnecessarily) increases cost without benefit.
Quick Buying Checklist
- Check your vehicle’s axle load requirement.
- Match or exceed the Load Index.
- Choose proper Speed Rating (K/L is usually enough).
- Always maintain correct air pressure.
