If you are new to trucks, buses, or fleet operations, understanding commercial tyres can feel confusing at first. Unlike car tyres, commercial tyres are designed to carry heavy loads of 10 to 40 tons, travel long distances on highways, and survive rough Indian roads every day.
There are two basic types of commercial tyres:
• Bias-ply tyres : These have strong sidewalls and are tougher on bad roads, construction sites, and overloaded conditions. They are still popular for certain heavy-duty uses.
• Radial tyres : These are modern tyres that run cooler, give better fuel mileage, offer longer life on highways, and provide a smoother ride. Most new trucks and buses now use radial tyres.
Tyre size matters a lot. Common Indian sizes include:
10.00-20 – Width in inches, suitable for 20-inch rim
295/80R22.5 – 295 mm wide, 80% aspect ratio, radial construction on 22.5-inch rim
The right tyre improves safety, reduces fuel cost, and increases tyre life. Wrong choice can lead to frequent punctures, fast wear, or even accidents.
Start by looking at the sidewall of your current tyres or check your vehicle manual. Understanding basic markings is the first step toward smart buying and safe driving.
